Determination of nuclear graphite impurities by prompt gamma activation analysis to support decommissioning operations

چکیده

Abstract Elemental composition of non-irradiated nuclear grade graphite was determined by Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) to quantitively assess some neutron activation precursors. The knowledge these data is paramount for an accurate radiological characterization the material before decommissioning graphite-moderated reactors. Bulk results most nuclides were consistent with benchmark Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and literature data. In case 14 N 35 Cl, depth distribution profiles observed quantified first time. These outcomes could shine a light on C 36 Cl fractional release during leaching experiments.

Prompt-Gamma Activation Analysis

A permanent, full-time instrument for prompt-gamma activation analysis is nearing completion as part of the Cold Neutron Research Facility (CNRF). The design of the analytical system has been optimized for high gamma detection efficiency and low background, particularly for hydrogen. Because of the purity of the neutron beam, shielding requirements are modest and the scatter-capture background ...

Application of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis to Investigate Archaeological Ceramics

Applicability of PGAA on pottery archaeometry has been proved in investigations of pre-Columbian figurines from Venezuela. PGAA is a non-destructive bulk analytical method, capable to determine concentration of majorand some trace components. We take part in the MÖB-DAAD project aimed to investigate Hungarian Neolithic pottery, and also in an IAEA CRP with more methodological objectives. Within...

Xenon diffusion studies with prompt gamma activation analysis

Developing a better understanding of xenon transport through porous systems is critical to predicting how this gas will enter the atmosphere after a below ground nuclear weapons test. Radioxenon monitoring is a vital part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) International Monitoring System. This work details the development of prompt gamma activation analysis for measuring the di...

Hydrogen content in doped and undoped BaPrO3 and BaCeO3 by cold neutron prompt-gamma activation analysis

Proton uptake in undoped and Y-doped BaPrO3 has been measured by cold neutron prompt-gamma activation analysis, and compared to the proton uptake in Gd-doped BaCeO3, as determined by the same technique. The conventional proton incorporation model of perovskites in which oxygen ion vacancies, generated by the introduction of the trivalent dopant onto the tetravalent perovskite site, are filled w...
